THE WARBLER GALLERY

I find the Warblers to be some of the most beautiful and challenging birds to photograph and challenging is the reason why they are my favorite of the small birds. Their spring and fall migrations leave little time to enjoy them but are very rewarding. Warblers move through the thick and dense foliage, flitting and feeding on small insects and rarely giving the opportunity for an unobstructed shot.

A collection of Warbler and Vireo images are included in the gallery below: American Redstart, Audubon’s, Bay-Breasted, Black and White, Blackpoll, Blue-Winged, Blackburnian, Black-Throated Green, Black-Throated Blue, Canada, Cape May, Cerulean, Chestnut-Sided, Common Yellowthroat, Hooded, Kentucky, Kirtland’s, Magnolia, Mourning, Nashville, Northern Parula, Ovenbird, Palm, Prairie, Pine Warbler, Tennessee, Yellow , Yellow-Rumped, Wilson’s, Red-Eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Philadelphia Vireo, Blue-Headed Vireo, White-Eyed Vireo

Warbler facts:

  • Warblers range in size from about 4.5 inches to 7 inches with 5.5 inches being the average length

  • Warblers come in a large variety of brilliant colors and plumage, especially in the spring

  • Warblers migrate in spring and fall. They spend the winters in the southern US, Mexico, Central and South America and the Bahamas. Most Warblers summer in the northern US and Canada although there are certain species that live in the US year around

  • Warblers use several feeding methods , “gleaning” and “hovering” or the combined “hover gleaning”. Gleaning is a feeding strategy by birds in which they catch invertebrate prey, mainly arthropods, by plucking them from foliage or the ground. “ Hover gleaning” is a strategy in which they hover in the air while gleaning insects from leaves and branches
